TANGERANG - Since returning to Indonesia, Chery has grown rapidly and continues to innovate, producing various modern vehicles in the ICE, BEV, and PHEV segments.

Despite the numerous models already launched, the Chinese brand still doesn't have its own factory. The Chinese brand is partnering with local manufacturer Handal Indonesia Motor as a strategy to strengthen the domestic industry's contribution.

Budi Darmawan, Sales Director of PT CSI, stated that Chery's partnership with Handal provides added value for the Indonesian government and contributes to the government as well.

"Because, of course, we're collaborating with Handal, and Handal is a local company," he said when met at ICE BSD, Tangerang.

He further explained that the collaboration with Handal is not just a production contract, but also part of an ecosystem that drives the domestic economy.

"We continue to increase production. Of course, the people who benefit from this are Indonesians, Indonesian workers, and we contribute to the Indonesian economy," he added.

Chery itself is actually open to the option of building its own factory. However, this is considered to have the potential to disrupt the local partner's existing operations and create jobs. Their contribution currently reaches 3,000 units per month.

"We could also consider investing in building our own factory, but then some of the factories here (Handal) would have to stop. Our contribution to Handal is very large, 3,000 units per month. Therefore, we don't want layoffs and are opting for a win-win situation," he explained.

As is known, all Chery car models currently available in Indonesia are completely knocked down (CKD) in Indonesia. This is the main reason the brand doesn't use the complete import (CBU) route.

"Because Chery is not a CBU, our entire product lineup is CKD. So, if CBU is different, we continue to import it, but there's no added value for the government," he concluded.
