JAKARTA - The owner of a BMW electric vehicle in the US is haunted by problems with his car, which has the potential to suddenly lose power for 20 seconds.
Knowing this issue, BMW decided to make a recall of 70,852 units of electric vehicles which are produced in 2022 and 2024.
Launching from InsideEVs, Wednesday, July 2, the manufacturer initially thought the problem was caused by the driving unit itself, not the software that controlled it, but so rarely that it could not find the real problem.
BMW noted that between 2021 and 2022, they received warranty claims related to the matter, all of which showed possible damage to the driving force.
However, after examining the bike, high-voltage batteries, and electronic control units as a whole, BMW did not find a source of the problem.
Having found the number of reports and guarantee claims very low, the manufacturer assessed that the problem did not come from supplier production.
Then, the investigation into the problem was continued until 2023 and 2024, when it became clear that there was nothing physically wrong with the vehicle.
However, according to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), BMW concluded that the problem was identified as a genuine double isolation condition, requiring a high voltage system shutdown.
However, it's just a single isolation condition. As a security measure, the high voltage system is turned off to prevent possible electric shocks or thermal risks.
Luckily, components such as power steering and braking are still functioning even though the car has lost its full power so that the driver can still control the vehicle.
The German manufacturer has not received any reports regarding an accident, injury, and casualties caused by the problem.
BMW reported as many as 43 guarantee claims were filed as a result of these defects and covered less than 0.1% of all potentially affected vehicles, suggesting that these incidents are very rare.

Due to this problem, BMW made a recall involving the i4 model produced between 2022 and 2025 as many as 35,414 units, i5 to 4,674 units of 2024 and 2025 production, i7 as many as 5,484 units of 2024 output, and iX as many as 25,280 units assembled in 2022 and 2024.
To deal with the problem, BMW appealed to EV owners to update the software either through dealers or over-the-air.
Dealers have been notified of the matter on June 13 and the manufacturer will notify owners starting August 5.
