Honda Targets Solid-State Battery For 997 Km Journey Once Charged

JAKARTA - Honda Motor Co.Ltd seeks to develop its solid-state battery to provide a distance of up to 997 km in one charge.

Quoting from the InsideEVs page, Monday, December 9, if this figure is correct, it can certainly increase the reach of electric cars that are currently circulating a lot.

The Japanese brand also claims that the new solid-state batteries developed will measure 50 percent smaller, 35 percent lighter, and 25 percent cheaper for production than the current liquid-based ion lithium batteries.

In fact, Honda's new battery-dense electrolyte cell also promises to be much safer than currently available on the market, and accepts a much higher charging speed. Honda is also ambitious to create batteries with even further reach by 2040.

Although that sounds amazing, it is undeniable that the prototype battery cell that is being tested at a smaller size cannot be used in any vehicle.

"That's why we created a pilot path to identify and deal with any issues in terms of size and mass production as soon as possible," said Chief Engineer Honda R&D Takeshi Ueda.

Furthermore, he said, currently Honda must make a 100 times larger battery prototype, and are working to bring it to the mass production stage.

The manufacturer with the H logo believes it can overcome these obstacles. In fact, claiming the battery will later be a game changer in the segment of pure electric vehicles.

"Our total solid-state battery will be a game changer in the EV era," said Honda R&D Co President Keiji Otsu.

As previously reported by VOI, Honda is building a demonstration line as a provision to mass-produce all-solid-state batteries in the future. The line has a total area of about 27,400 m2 equipped with facilities and equipment enabling verification of each production process.

Verification of this production process includes balancing and mixing electrode materials, coating, and compressing electrode assembly rolls and cell formation, and assembly modules. It is estimated that the construction of this facility building will be completed in the spring of this year and almost all the main equipment needed for verification has been installed.
