Mercedes-Benz Will Offer New Generation S-Classes In ICE And EV Versions, Ends EQS Period

JAKARTA - Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that it will unite the S-Class and EQS models into one line of models by offering electric and gasoline (ICE) drive options until the end of the next decade.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kllenius said the latest generation S-Class model will be present in gasoline and EV engines in the future under the name EQS which will end its adventure in the luxury electric vehicle industry.

"There will be two S-Classes in the future, namely ICE and electricity," said Kallenius, quoted from Carscoops, Monday, September 2.

Both versions are expected to adopt the same exterior and interior designs, although they will most likely carry a much different platform.

Furthermore, this eighth generation S-Class will carry the architecture of MB.EA Large. Although there are reports that Mercedes-Benz canceled the launch of this platform, Kallenius said that this system is in the development stage.

It is stated that this architecture will support the electric version of the S-Class, while the combustion engine version will be built on the foundation of the latest version of the Modular Rear Architecture (MRA).

In terms of design and style, Mercedes-Benz also said future ICE and EV ranks will have strong visual connections just like the latest G-Classes or use similar approaches like BMW in Series-5 or i5 and Series-7 or i7.

The change in Mercedes-Benz' plans for its future products has been estimated by various parties because this premium brand has difficulty meeting EV sales targets, thus encouraging manufacturers to present more ICE vehicles combined with EVs in the future.

In addition, the German brand hopes that the EV segment will contribute 50 percent of its total sales by 2030. Mercedes-Benz also intends to increase sales as it will invest more in ICE engines.

Before the new generation S-Class comes, the manufacturer will launch an upgrade version of this luxury start in 2026.
