JAKARTA - It is common knowledge that electric cars are practical and have minimal maintenance, so that most maintenance is a problem of changing tires, brake camps, battery cooling liquids, and cabin air filters.
But on the one hand, electric cars also have heavier weight than combustion cars (ICE) due to the weight of the battery installed. Well, because of this, electric car tires sometimes run fast from ICE cars and experience changes in tires more often.
A recent study from JD Power, a consumer intelligence company and data analysis in the United States, found that the level of satisfaction of electric car owners with factory built-in tires (OEM) is decreasing compared to gas car owners.
According to the study "JD Power 2024 US Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study" released March 25, the owner of an electric car turned out to have the same expectations for the wear as the owner of a gasoline car. In fact, electric car tires are naturally busier because of the heavier vehicle weight and higher torque.
"This widening satisfaction gap between electric vehicles and gasoline-fueled vehicles highlights opportunities for tire manufacturers and car manufacturers to educate electric car owners about the difference in tire performance," said Senior Director of Benchmarking and Alternative Mobility JD Power, Ashley Edgar, in a company release.
"In addition, because there is an inherent conflict between maximizing vehicle travel distance and optimizing tire wear for EVs, tire manufacturers and automakers need to work together to overcome this challenge without fully sacrificing tire performance in other areas, especially as the EV market continues to increase," he added.

Findings About Tire Brands Trusted By Consumers
This study measures the satisfaction of tire owners in four areas (based on interests): tire comfort, tire wear, traction/handling tires, and tire appearance. This study covers four segments of vehicles: luxury, passenger cars, sports performance, and trucks/utility. The respondents were 31,414 model vehicle owners in 2022 and 2023, surveyed from August to December 2023.
It Is Important To Know Electric Car Owners
The findings of this study show the importance for electric car owners to understand the difference between electric car tires and gasoline cars. Electric car tires are naturally faster, but education from car manufacturers and tires can help electric car owners maximize their lifespan using tires.
