JAKARTA - Wushu athlete Edgar Xavier Marvelo officially decided to end his career after helping Indonesia win a gold medal at the 2025 SEA Games which took place in Thailand.
Edgar ensured that the 2025 SEA Games, which is currently still taking place, is his last stage with the Indonesian national team and after that he began to focus on taking care of his small family.
"This is my last performance for the Indonesian wushu team. For the time being, there are no plans because I also decided to take a break for a while," he said after returning to Jakarta.
Currently, Edgar's wife is pregnant with their first child. He is estimated to be born early next year so Edgar also wants to be able to really take care of them.
Edgar said that in addition to family considerations, the decision to retire was made because he wanted to make way for the new generations of Indonesian wushu who were under him.
"I hope that the generations of my successors can continue to achieve. I really hope that I can be more than me for sure. In addition, I also hope that I will still contribute to Indonesian wushu," he said.
Edgar closed his journey on the stage of the 2025 SEA Games with the achievement of one gold medal and one silver medal. His contribution managed to bring wushu to the overall champion in the event.
The latest gold medal won in Thailand is Edgar's fourth gold medal throughout his participation representing the Indonesian wushu team in the SEA Games.
He first won gold at the 2019 SEA Games when he competed in the daoshu/gunshu and duilian events. Meanwhile, another gold medal was won at the 2023 edition in Cambodia from the changquan event.
