Daniil Medvedev Fined IDR 700 Million For Rampage And Racket Abuse

Daniil Medvedev was fined a total of 42,500 US dollars (approximately IDR 700 million) by the US Open on Wednesday, 27 August 2025 local time - more than a third of his tournament prizes which amounted to 110,000 US dollars (IDR 1.8 billion) - over his tantrum when he lost in the first round after a photographer entered the field during the match.

Tournament referee Jake Garner fined Medvedev USD 30,000 (IDR 494 million) for his unsportsmanlike behavior and USD 12,500 (IDR 197 million) again for abuse of a racket.

When the game ended, Medvedev repeatedly hit the racket into the chair on the sidelines, damaging the equipment.

Medvedev, the former number 1 winner who won the Cup at Flushing Meadows in 2021, was angry on Sunday, August 24, 2025, evening local time, when seat referee Greg Allensworth decided to allow his opponent, Benjamin Bonzi, to perform another first service after a strange interruption.

Bonzi was only one point adrift of the win while leading 5-4 in the third set when a photographer whose credentials were later revoked began walking along the side of the pitch at the Louis Armstrong Stadium right after making a mistake.

Allensworth asked the photographer to leave the field, then announced that Bonzi would get another first service due to the delay.

Medvedev approached the referee to complain. That's when the atmosphere became excited. The audience started booing and chanting 'second service'. The match was stopped for more than six minutes as Medvedev angered the fans and insulted Allensworth.

"He wants to go home, friends. He doesn't like being here. He is paid per game, not per hour," Medvedev said to the microphone behind the referee's seat.

When the situation returned to conducive, Medvedev finally won the set and fourth set. Bonzi finally won 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, and 6-4.

This is Medvedev's third Grand Slam defeat in a row in the first half and the second consecutive Grand Slam defeat to Bonzi after at Wimbledon 2025.
