Iga Swiatek Wins First Title Of Cincinnati Open

JAKARTA Iga Swiatek came out as the 2025 Cincinnati Open champion after beating Jasmine Paolini in the final round. It was Poland's first title from this tournament.

Swiatek, six-time Grand Slam champion, overtook the gap at the start of the match against Paolini to add one more big title to the list with 7-5 and 6-4 wins on Monday, August 18, 2025 local time.

"Joining at the Cincinnati Open is always difficult. This victory gives me an impetus for confidence," Swiatek was quoted as saying by AFP.

This is Swiatek's fifth win over Paolini in their five meetings. He was 0-3 behind at the start of the first set before winning in an hour and 49 minutes.

This victory made Swiatek automatically the first Polish player in the Open era (since 1968) to win a title from the singles sector of the event.

This is the 24th WTA Tour single title in Swiatek's career and 11th at the WTA 1000 level. In addition, the trophy is his second WTA title this year, which he won a month after he won the 2025 Wimbledon.

Swiatek is now only two titles adrift of Serena Williams' record collecting 13 WTA 1000 trophies.

This victory also raised Swiatek's ranking closer to Aryna Sabalenka at the top of the WTA rankings.

The 24-year-old is only 500 points adrift and is in the race for the number one position in the world, which he has previously sat on.

"Today it's tough, we're both tense because it's final. Not everything is going perfectly, but I'm able to focus mentally on playing the best tennis. That's the result of our mental hard work," he said.

In addition, this victory made Swiatek the second seed at the US Open 2025, which is the last Grand Slam tournament in the annual tour calendar.
