IGK Manila Leaves Sweet Memory In Sports: Persija, Indonesian National Team, To Wushu

JAKARTA - The world of sports is grieving after one of the figures, Major General TNI Retired. Dr. (HC) I Gusti Kompyang (IGK) Manila passed away at Bunda Menteng Hospital on August 18, 2025 at 08.59 WIB.

IGK Manila cannot be separated from the history of Indonesian football. The peak of his career as manager of the Indonesian national team occurred at the 1991 SEA Games in Manila, Philippines, where he managed to bring the Garuda Squad to a gold medal.

The historic victory was achieved after defeating Thailand on penalties 4-3 (0-0) in the final which was held at the Cambodian Olympic Stadium, a moment that is still remembered today.

IGK Manila also has a crucial role at the club level. He once served as Persija Jakarta Manager.

Under his leadership, the Kemayoran Tigers successfully won the Indonesian League title in 2001. Persija's victory in the 2001 Indonesian League final was obtained impressively.

They managed to beat PSM Makassar with a score of 3-2 in the top match which took place at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium.

After making many achievements, IGK Manila decided to leave Persija in 2007. This decision was taken for a wise reason, namely because of the declining age and health conditions.

Apart from Persija, IGK Manila even contributed when Bandung Raya won the 1996 Indonesian League title.

Not only known in the world of football, but IGK Manila is also a national sports figure who has a broad influence. Its dedication is not limited to just one sport, but has penetrated various sectors.

One of the proofs is when he got the nickname Mr. Wushu. This nickname was given as a form of recognition for his great contribution to the development of wushu sports in the country.

His presence provides a significant impetus for Indonesian wushu athletes to excel in the national and international arenas.

His story in wushu stems from the order of the General Chairperson of the Central KONI, General (Ret.) Surono Reksodimedjo, to him who is the deputy chairman of the Indonesian contingent to prepare the 1993 SEA Games in Singapore.

IGK Manila was ordered to prepare a wushu team to participate in the SEA Games.

He sought information about wushu from the Chinese community so that he was helped by a Taichi Mediteransyah Masnadi activist.

The two formed wushu management to coordinate and communicate with the Ministry of Home Affairs (Depdagri) and Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Admiral Sudomo.

Meanwhile, condolences also flowed from the General Chairperson of the Central KONI, Lt. Gen. Retired Marciano Norman.

To pay his last respects to the late IGK Manila, a series of funeral processions have been scheduled.

The body of the deceased will be dispatched from Bunda Hospital to Gatot Soebroto Central Hospital.

There, the funeral procession will be carried out to prepare the deceased for his final resting place.

After being bathed, the body was taken to the Aula of the State Defense Academy (ABN) at 14.00 WIB, Monday, August 18, 2025.

ABN Hall was chosen as a temporary burial place to provide the widest possible opportunity for family, friends, and friends to mourn and pay their last respects.

The peak of the honor procession will take place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. At 11.00 WIB, the body will depart from ABN to Gatot Soebroto Hospital for the cremation procession.

Before departure, an oversized ceremony will be held in ABN. This ceremony is a form of respect for the services and service of the deceased to the nation and state during his life.
