Vanenburg Ogah Seri Let Alone Lose In Derby Against Malaysia U-23

JAKARTA - The U-23 Indonesian national team coach, Gerald Vanenburg, emphasized his determination to play optimally in the final match of the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup group phase. Meeting Malaysia U-23, the Dutch coach was reluctant to end in a draw, let alone lose.

The U-23 Indonesian national team will host Malaysia in the third match of Group A of the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Jakarta, on Monday, July 21, 2025, at 20.00 WIB.

This match is the determinant of the steps to qualify for the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup semifinals. In order to advance to that phase, the Garuda Muda squad only needs a draw over Malaysia.

Although the addition of one point is safe, Vanenburg admits that Indonesia U-23 must perform optimally to get three points given the long rivalry between the two teams.

"Yes, I want to win every game, as well as Malaysia's opponents. We don't know who our next opponent will be, but we want to win. Whether we can win or not, but we will definitely fight," said Vanenburg at the Madya Stadium, Jakarta, quoted Monday, July 21, 2025.

Gerald Vanenburg considers the Indonesia U-23 vs Malaysia U-23 duel a fierce derby match. Therefore, Garuda Muda must win over the Young Malayan Tiger.

"I think these two countries are very close, but Indonesia vs Malaysia matches have always been derby."

"I've also fought Germany and Belgium. So, I understand this match is very important."

"However, I think the most important thing is that we must respect Malaysia and try to beat them in the way we want to play," Vanenburg said.

Meanwhile, regarding the condition of the U-23 Indonesian national team squad, Vanenburg said there were a number of players who were not 100 percent in condition. However, he still believes in his team's chances.

"I'm always sure that we have a team that can win matches, but so do Malaysia."

"We have to prepare well because we know Malaysia is a good team," said Vanenburg.
