Having A New Goalkeeper, Liverpool Officially Recruits Freddie Woodman

JAKARTA - Liverpool officially announced the recruitment of new goalkeeper Freddie Woodman as part of a strategy to strengthen the squad for the 2025/26 season.

"Liverpool successfully signed Freddie Woodman on a free transfer," Liverpool said in a statement on the club's official website on Saturday.

The 28-year-old player was signed free of charge from Preston North End after his contract expires on June 30, 2025.

Woodman, who previously played for Newcastle United and a number of loan clubs such as Swansea City and Bournemouth, will be the third goalkeeper behind Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili.

This recruitment was carried out to fill the void after Caoimhin Kelneck's departure to Brentford and Vitezslav Jaros' loan to Ajax and Harvey Davies to Crawley Town.

The London-born goalkeeper has a significant experience in the Championship division, with 138 appearances with Preston North End, where he won the club Player of the Year award in the 2022/23 season.

In addition, Woodman is also part of the England U-20 team that won the U-20 World Cup in 2017, establishing his reputation as a talented goalkeeper.

Another advantage of this transfer is Woodman's status as a homerown player, who will not take a non-homerown slot on the Liverpool squad list for UEFA competitions, such as the Champions League.

"Freddie Woodman is a smart addition to our squad. His experience at competitive level and his status as a homerown player will be very helpful, especially to keep the team's depth in the goalkeeper's position," Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said in a club statement.

Woodman is scheduled to join Liverpool's squad for a pre-season training session at the AXA Training Center in July.

This transfer marks Liverpool's fifth move in the 2025 summer transfer market, after signing Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Armin Pesci, and Florian Wirtz.
