JAKARTA - Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution continues to monitor residents who were victims of 11 houses damaged by a tornado in Binjai Village, Medan Denai.

"(Last night) we received reports from residents that there was a tornado in Denai. I immediately checked to see the condition of the residents. This is a disaster that we cannot avoid, but thankfully there were no casualties," Bobby said in Medan, Sunday, October 31.

President Jokowi's son-in-law said that residents at the scene said that strong winds had occurred which had damaged dozens of houses.

He estimated that the damage caused varied between 15 and 50 percent, including part of the roof of the house flying off and even the kitchen part of the house collapsing.

As is known, a number of areas of Medan City and its surroundings on Saturday (30/10) at around 20.00 western Indonesia time, were hit by heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

"We are also concerned about this disaster. The Medan City Government continues to provide assistance to residents who are victims of this tornado," said Bobby.

The mayor also immediately ordered the Medan City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to immediately distribute aid to victims.

"Last night, the assistance of mattresses or mats and blankets was immediately delivered to lighten the burden on the residents," said Mayor Bobby.

The sub-district head of Medan Denai, Ali Sipahutar, admitted that the number one person from the Medan City Government immediately went down to inspect the victims affected by the strong winds of the tornado.

"Yes, last night, the guardian inspected the residents. Apart from the basic materials brought by the guardian, we were ordered to coordinate with BPBD," said Ali.
