JAKARTA - Mainland China reported 78 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, up from 64 the day before, China's National Health Commission said Saturday.

A total of 59 infections were local cases, which was also an increase from 48 cases the day before, the local health authority said in a statement.

Most of the local cases were reported in northern China, namely in Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Beijing and Ningxia.

Authorities also recorded 24 asymptomatic COVID-19 cases, up from 23 the day before.

China does not count asymptomatic cases as confirmed cases.

There have been no new deaths from COVID-19 in China, bringing the total to 4,636.
