Hidayat Nur Wahid Talks About Religious Moderation, Asks Students, Da'wah Activists To Follow The Example Of Participants In The Second Youth Congress

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of the MPR RI Hidayat Nur Wahid stressed the importance of presenting understanding and practice of religious moderation for youth, students, and activists of da'wah institutions on campus.

Especially in the momentum of the Youth Pledge Day commemoration. Youth, students, and da'wah activists on campus can easily get exemplary fatwas.

"How can the youth participating in the Second Youth Congress who agree and pledge the Youth Pledge have a national commitment with a moderate religious understanding," Hidayat said in a statement in Jakarta, Antara, Saturday, October 30.

He said this in the National Public Dialogue with the theme "Students as Pioneers of Religious Moderation on Campus" which was held by the Gathering Forum of the National Campus Da'wah Institute, last Friday.

This PKS politician said that the Youth Pledge had a national commitment with moderate religious understanding, as seen from those with religious backgrounds such as Jong Islamiten Bond representing Muslim youth and Katholieke Jongenlingen Bond representing Catholic youth.

According to him, with this religious moderation, the youths joined forces with their colleagues and were actively involved in collective efforts which later resulted in a monumental agreement and became a milestone for the independence of the Indonesian state and nation.

"Since the first, the moderate attitude of religious life in Indonesia has been carried out by young people and students. From various backgrounds, they are steadfast in practicing their religion, while respecting/tolerant each other, and inclusively working together to realize the common goal of an independent Indonesia," he said.

He explained that in the Indonesian constitution, religion is a legal, constitutional, and even pillar of Indonesia's independence as agreed by Committee 9.

According to him, the nine figures who are members of the Committee of Nine have set an example that as activists, educated people, and religious people, they are able to come up with compromises with moderate religious practices so that they can agree on the Jakarta Charter.

"Their background as national figures of moderate Muslims and Christians allows them to agree on the ideals of an independent Indonesia and the basis of the state, which they set out in the Jakarta Charter and become the preamble to the 1945 Constitution," he said.

He said the results of the agreement were full of moderate religious values, as well as national and humanitarian values of prosperity, justice and peace.

Hidayat assessed that students, youth and campus da'wah activists could imitate the figures involved in Committee 9 on how to be moderate, tolerant, and inclusive of religion so that they could involve themselves and be trusted to present joint solutions for national and international good affairs.

The National Public Dialogue event took place in a hybrid manner at the Pattimura University Campus, Ambon and was also attended by the Chancellor of the Pattimura University, MJ Sapteno.
