Earthquake Of 5.8 Magnitude Shakes Bitung City, North Sulawesi, Residents Panic

JAKARTA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 occurred in Bitung City, North Sulawesi Province on Monday, October 11 at 19:34 WIB.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Bitung City reported that the shaking during the earthquake was felt for 2 to 4 seconds. Residents reportedly panicked.

"The shock that was felt caused local residents to panic until they left their homes. However, BPBD reported that the situation was conducive and the community had returned to their homes," said Plt. Head of BNPB Disaster Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari in his statement, Monday, October 11.

Based on earthquake parameters from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter was 132 km southeast of Bitung with a depth of 10 kilometers.

Judging from the strength of the shock as measured by MMI or Modified Mercally Intensity, the earthquake was felt IV MMI in Bolaang Mongondow, III MMI in Bitung and Minahasa, and II - III MMI in Ternate, Manado and Airmadidi. The higher the MMI, the greater the potential impact.

InaRISK analysis shows that Bitung City is an area with a moderate to high earthquake hazard potential.

A total of 8 sub-districts in this city are in this category, including Madidir, Matuari, Girian, South Lembeh, North Lembeh, Aertembaga, Maesa and Ranowulu.

"Facing the danger of earthquakes, people are expected to always be alert and ready. This is because the phenomenon of earthquakes is unpredictable and can occur at any time," said Abdul Muhari.
