GARUT - Garut Police, West Java Regional Police conducted an investigation into the case of dozens of residents belonging to the Indonesian Islamic State (NII) group, causing public unrest because this group was considered to deviate from the ideology of the Indonesian state.
"Currently, what is clear is that we are still in the deepening and investigating stage because of reports from residents," said Garut Police Chief AKBP Wirdhanto Hadicaksono, quoted by Antara, Friday, October 8.
He said the police had received information that parents were worried about their children who were suspected of joining the group.
The police, he said, are investigating the case to find out whether or not there are indications that lead to a wrong understanding of the sect.
"We will see if this is indeed an indication of exposure to certain sects, it is still being investigated," said the Chief of Police.
He said his staff would clarify the parents of the children suspected of being involved in the NII group.
The results of the police investigation, he said, will later be collaborated with other elements who are also handling the case.
"Later we will collaborate with other elements," he said.
Previously, a number of children and adults in the urban areas of Garut Regency were suspected of joining the NII group in Garut.
The case was revealed when there was a resident in Garut Kota whose 15-year-old son had a distorted understanding of the faith.
