MAKI Asks KPK To Examine Novel Baswedan, Investigate Allegations Of 'Insider' Azis Syamsuddin

JAKARTA - Coordinator of the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI), Boyamin Saiman, asked the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to examine his former investigator, Novel Baswedan, to investigate the alleged presence of insiders within the institution who protected former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Azis Syamsuddin.

Moreover, Novel admitted that he knew who the insiders were so that the allegations became clearer and the anti-corruption commission could investigate.

"Dewas and the KPK are obligated to examine Novel for indications that there are eight people who are considered a rescue team or who can be controlled by Azis Syamsuddin in accordance with their interests", Boyamin told reporters, Thursday, October 7.

Not only that, the KPK is said to need to explore the information at the trial by examining the Regional Secretary of Tanjungbalai Yusmada and his former investigator who became the accused recipient of bribes related to the handling of the case, Stepanus Robin Pattuju.

This handling, said Boyamin, must be done firmly and correctly, and openly. Thus, the process of finding the eight people who protected Azis in the anti-corruption commission could continue to be monitored by the public.

Moreover, this investigation is seen as a gamble to keep the KPK in the eyes of the public. "I'm worried that I won't get the eight people. Well, it's failed later, it looks like it's not working, this will get even worse for the image of the KPK", said Boyamin.

He also asked the KPK and the Council to actively seek evidence and facts about the whereabouts of the messenger. The reason is that it is impossible for people outside the KPK to carry out tracking in order to have sufficient evidence regarding the allegations that occurred within the institution.

In addition, the KPK and the Supervisory Board must not abandon the problems that exist within their institutions.

"This is a bad attitude and must be stopped. It is the same as hoping for corruption eradication through public reports. Yes, the community can't have evidence of corruption. It is the KPK, which has a wiretapping device, that must prove itself", he said.

As previously reported, information regarding the presence of insiders to protect Azis Syamsuddin was revealed during a hearing at the Corruption Court on Monday, October 4 yesterday. At that time, the KPK prosecutor read out the BAP (police investigation report) belonging to the Regional Secretary Tanjungbalai, Yusmada, who was presented as a witness for the defendant Stepanus.

In the BAP, Yusmada said that he heard from the Mayor of Tanjungbalai, M Syahrial, that Azis Syamsuddin had eight people in the KPK who could be mobilized to secure the case against him. One of them is Stepanus Robin Pattuju while the other is not mentioned.
