Regarding Land Subsidence, Deputy Governor: Jakarta Is Indeed Below Sea Level

JAKARTA - Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Ahmad Riza Patria responded to the phenomenon of land subsidence in Jakarta. He considers, currently Jakarta is below sea level.

"Regarding groundwater in DKI Jakarta, there is indeed a decrease in groundwater, that Jakarta is indeed below sea level," said Riza at DKI City Hall, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, October 5.

Riza said that the decline in land surface in Jakarta was caused by the extraction of ground water from household consumption to commercial use.

Given that the coverage of piped clean water services operated by PAM Jaya has only reached 65 percent. "So, the rest of the community is still taking it from the pump," he said.

However, currently the DKI Provincial Government and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) are building a drinking water supply system (SPAM) in the form of a water distribution pipeline network from Karian Reservoir to Jatiluhur.

"We have prepared together with the Ministry of PUPR, namely from Karian Serpong, Jatiluhur 1, and Juanda to be able to distribute all clean water needs in Jakarta in the future," said Riza.

As is known, currently the coverage of drinking water or clean water services in DKI Jakarta has only reached 65 percent of the total needs. PAM Jaya still lacks a supply of 13 thousand liters of water per second to meet the needs of residents.

Thus, apart from using PAM water, some households and commercial activities still use groundwater to meet their needs. Then, there is also the use of water kiosks for residents living in the northern part of Jakarta.

Currently, a number of SPAMs are under construction. It is hoped that by 2030 the coverage of clean water services in Jakarta has reached 100 percent with the ability to drain 33,725 liters of water per second.
