JAKARTA - The Banjarmasin City Government is drafting regulations on the COVID-19 health protocol regarding the use of masks. This is done to improve community discipline which is still considered low.

The Mayor of Banjarmasin, Ibnu Sina, said that under the draft regulation, people who do not wear masks will be subject to sanctions.

"Because the level of community discipline is still low, it needs sanctions. Not wearing a mask costs Rp. 250 thousand," Ibnu told reporters on Sunday, July 19.

However, the Rp. 250 thousand fine is not final. His party is still conducting studies on the amount of the fine. However, this regulation will later be issued through a mayoral regulation (Perwali).

"Hopefully next week (the formulation of the rules) will be completed," he said.

Although the regulation is not final, he said, this sanction is very open to be applied. Apart from fines, other sanctions are still being discussed. "Whether in the form of a Rp. 250 thousand fine or moral and other sanctions, I think the choice lies in the mayor's regulation," he said.

According to him, this rule cannot be rushed. "Do not let the initial regulation be like that, but implementation in the field is difficult," he said.

Until now, positive cases of COVID-19 in Banjarmasin have reached 1,853 people. At least 138 people died and 439 people recovered.
