PADANG - A total of eight residents of Padang, West Sumatra received minor criminal sanctions in the form of a fine of Rp. 100,000. They were caught littering in the period August-September.

"Sanctions were given to eight residents who were caught in the act of littering with the Satpol PP," said Head of the Padang City Environment Service, Mairizon, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, September 22.

He explained, initially along the Padang Bypass road, his party often found residents throwing garbage carelessly.

To prevent this, his party routinely monitors and reminds residents not to litter.

"Usually we carry out raids and remind them not to repeat them, but six months later, residents are still littering, so we were arrested together with the Satpol PP," said Mairizon.

However, considering that it is still a pandemic, the trial for minor crimes was conducted online for eight people who were caught.

"There are two choices of sanctions, paying a fine of IDR 100,000 or imprisonment for three days," Mairizon continued.

According to him, the value of the fine imposed is not commensurate with the long efforts that have been made from arrest to trial.

"But the target is how to provide a deterrent effect to residents, so they don't litter," he said.

Mairizon hopes that the public will know that there is a proper place and time for disposing of waste.

Based on data collected from the Final Disposal Site in Air Cold, there are 540 tons of waste produced by Padang residents every day

To reduce the waste that is disposed of at the Air Cold TPA, his party tries to carry out management from upstream starting from empowering waste banks to making recycled products from waste.

"Thus, the waste that reaches the TPA will be less and more useful," said Mairizon.
