BMKG: Agam West Sumatra M 5.2 Earthquake Due To Indo-Australian Plate Subduction

PADANG - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) released an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 in Agam Regency, West Sumatra.

The earthquake that occurred at sea 42 kilometers southwest of Lubuk Basung City, Agam Regency, West Sumatra was due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian Plate.

"Taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was of an intermediate type due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian Plate under the Australian Plate", said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Bambang Setiyo Prayitno, quoted by Antara, Sunday, September 12.

The tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred at around 16.02 WIB and shocked residents.

Bambang explained that the results of the analysis of the source mechanism showed that the earthquake had an oblique thrust fault mechanism.

The BMKG modeling results show that the 57 kilometers depth earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

The earthquake shocks were not only felt in the Agam area, but also residents in Bukittinggi, Payakumbuh, South Solok, Padang, Padangpanjang, to Muko-Muko Bengkulu.

"At first I was at home, suddenly I felt a tremor so I immediately ran out of the house", said one resident of Tunggul Hitam, Padang City, Yunita (32).

According to BMKG monitoring, as of 16.30 WIB, there has been no aftershock activity after the first earthquake.

In addition, there have been no reports of the impact of the damage caused by the earthquake.

BMKG appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified.
