Tangerang Class I Prison Fires, DPR Urges Correctional Bill To Be Passed

JAKARTA - Member of Commission III of the DPR RI, Adde Rosi Khoerunnisa, asked the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) to take quick and measurable steps to ensure the evacuation of victims of the fire in Class I prison in Tangerang, Banten.

"Do the best treatment for the injured and recover the victim's family," said Adde, Thursday, September 9.

Regarding the responsibility of the Director General of Corrections regarding this incident, Adde urged the police to quickly conduct a thorough investigation and thoroughly investigate the cause of the fire that killed 44 inmates.

Adde hopes that this fire incident will become a momentum to immediately ratify the Correctional Bill so that issues related to overcapacity, facilities in prisons and various other problems can be resolved properly.

Where, said Adde, this bill in the last period was just waiting for its ratification. The Correctional Bill has also been included in the Prolegnas.

"We hope that Commission III of the DPR RI and the government will immediately sit down together to discuss this bill again, for the sake of improving prisons in the future. Because this is a humanitarian issue and a common problem, it cannot be delayed too long," said Adde.

Ade added that the fire in Tangerang Prison further extended the series of similar cases that had occurred before.

It was recorded that in 2020, a number of fire cases were among the first, riots and fires in Tuminting Prison, Manado, North Sulawesi. Second, the Purwokerto Prison caught fire. Third, riots and fires at Kabanjahe Prison, North Sumatra.

Therefore, this member of the Legislative Council of the Republic of Indonesia emphasized the need for the formulation of a mitigation strategy so that serious disasters such as the Fire in Tangerang Prison do not happen again.

"We want to emphasize the evaluation and formulation of mitigation strategies so that it does not happen again. In addition, the issue of excess prison capacity must also be of special attention to ensure the fulfillment of humanitarian, health and safety aspects," said the Golkar politician.
