Kendari Quarantine Center Fails To Smuggle 100 Kg Of Deer Meat

KENDARI - The Agricultural Quarantine Center (BKP) of Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, foiled an attempt to smuggle 100 kilograms of venison in Baubau City.

Agricultural Quarantine Paramedic Kendari Bambang said the venison was known to have been dispatched from Aru, Fakfak via passenger ship.

"When the completeness of the documents and physical examination were carried out, the venison did not have a quarantine requirement document from the area of origin," he said, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, September 8.

Bambang conveyed that the mode of smuggling of venison was hidden in stacked wooden boxes and wrapped in plastic.

Furthermore, to ascertain the type of meat, a physical examination is carried out and from the inspection to ensure that the meat is a protected animal product, namely deer, so that it is detained.

"Initially we were suspicious of a pile of plastic in a wooden box. We checked, it turned out that there was venison. We asked for documents from the area of origin, the owner could not show it. Finally we detained them and because deer are protected animals, we coordinated with the BKSDA," said Bambang.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Kendari Agricultural Quarantine Center, N. Prayatno Ginting, expressed his appreciation to the officers who thwarted the deer meat smuggling attempt.

He said the activities carried out by Agricultural Quarantine officials in accordance with Law No. 21 of 2019 concerning Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine, in their main duties and responsibilities, are stated to be obligated to supervise and/or control wild animals and protected animals.

As a follow-up to the detention of the deer meat, the Baubau Region BKSDA together with the Kendari Agricultural Quarantine and several related agencies destroyed the deer meat by burying it in the yard of the local BKSDA Office.
