JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD emphasized that the political and security situation in Papua is in good condition. Mahfud believes that the National Sports Week (PON) and National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) will go well.

Mahfud said that various potential threats had been anticipated. Thus, the implementation of PON and Peparnas is expected to run well.

The former chairman of the Constitutional Court (MK) also briefly mentioned the attack on the Kisor Preparatory Koramil post, Aifat District, which resulted in the death of four TNI members. However, this does not affect the plan for organizing PON because security and security have been prepared.

In addition, Mahfud ensured that health protocols must be carried out during the implementation of PON and Peparnas. Moreover, the two sports events were held in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mahfud said the government certainly would not prevent the public from watching PON or Peparnas directly. However, Mahfud said, of course there are limits on the number of spectators, distance, and various ways to prevent the transmission of COVID-19,

"We don't stop people from watching, but there are limits, limits on the number, distance, antigen, or PCR and so on have been regulated and prepared as well as possible," he said.

"Let's maintain cooperation, to enliven PON and Peparnas in Papua, the land of all of us, the land of pride of Indonesia, where Indonesia is also a land of pride for the Papuan people," added Mahfud.

Finally, Mahfud mentioned the readiness of PON and Papernas which he said had reached 99 percent. He said a number of athletes were scheduled to start arriving in Papua on 20 September.

"PON itself will be officially opened on October 2. But on September 20, athletes began to arrive and since then security and comfort have been prepared by the apparatus, committee, and even the Papuan regional government," he concluded.
