MAGELANG - Ash rain caused by volcanic clouds from the eruption of Mount Merapi occurred in a number of villages in Magelang Regency, Central Java.

The Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Magelang Regency, Edi Wasono in Magelang, said that at least nine villages in the Srumbung and Salam sub-districts were flooded with ash.

Hot clouds from Mount Merapi at 16.20 local time were recorded on a seismogram with an amplitude of 60 mm and a duration of 234 seconds. The weather is foggy, the estimated glide distance is 3000 meters to the southwest of Mount Merapi.

"Based on community reports, there has been ash rain due to hot clouds falling from Merapi," he said, quoted by Antara, Saturday, August 28.

He mentioned a number of villages where ash rains occurred, namely in Srumbung District including Kradenan, Srumbung, Kaliurang, Kemiren, Banyuadem, Jerukagung, and Ngablak Villages. Then in Salam District, ash rain occurred in Sucen Village and Kadiluwih Village.

Based on the recommendation of the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG), the potential danger of Mount Marapi is currently in the form of lava avalanches and hot clouds in the southeast-southwest sector for a maximum of 3 kilometers to the Woro River and 5 kilometers to the Gendol River, Kuning, Boyong, Bedog, Krasak, Bebeng, and White.

Meanwhile, the ejection of volcanic material in the event of an explosive eruption can reach a radius of 3 kilometers from the summit.

The public is asked not to carry out any activities in areas of potential danger.

The public should anticipate disturbances caused by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Merapi and be aware of the dangers of lava, especially when it rains around Mount Merapi.

Mining in the river channel that originates at Mount Merapi in KRB III is recommended to be stopped. Tourists are recommended not to carry out activities in potential hazard areas and crater openings as far as 5 kilometers from the peak of Mount Merapi.
