JAKARTA - The number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the South Kalimantan region has increased again by doubling.

"If we look at the provincial level, South Kalimantan's death rate has doubled in the past week," said Head of Data and Information Technology of the COVID-19 Task Force (Satgas) Dewi Nur Aisyah as reported by Antara, Thursday, August 12.

Dewi revealed that the number of death cases in South Kalimantan has now increased to 258 cases, from the previous week's 126 cases.

Central Java then took second place with an increase in the number of deaths by 4.1 percent or a total of 2,918 cases. Previously, there were 2,803 deaths in Central Java.

"The third is Riau, which rose 23.3 percent, North Sumatra also increased its death rate to 41.5 percent," said Dewi when revealing the province that experienced the highest increase in death cases.

Furthermore, he stated that the Bangka Belitung Islands also experienced an increase in the number of deaths by 34.4 percent or to 172 cases.

Dewi explained that the number of deaths when viewed numerically is not too high, because the evaluation of the deaths is carried out by her party on a weekly basis.

"But in terms of numbers it's not too high, because the last week the trend has started to decline like that. However, we will re-evaluate deaths on a weekly basis, if we look at the numbers from July 1 to August 4, they are still rising. Where the death rate in the last week as of July 29 to August 4 was 11,977," said Dewi. Based on data from the COVID-19 Task Force, this week there were 11,562 cases with an average daily death rate of 1,652.

He further explained that starting from August 5 to 11, 2021, the number of deaths due to COVID-19 had decreased, although only in a small amount.

"We have to highlight again, in fact the death did not immediately occur simultaneously with the decrease in the number of deaths. So we have to take a breath first to reduce the death rate," he said, urging people in each region to continue to comply with health protocols.
