JAKARTA - A man suspected of wounding 10 people with a knife on a Tokyo commuter train late on Friday told police he was angry when he saw women who "looked happy" and wanted to kill them, Japanese media said on Saturday.

Police arrested the 36-year-old man at a location in Tokyo after the assailant slashed and stabbed passengers at around 8:40 p.m. local time on the Odakyu Line train as it crossed the western part of the city, media said.

One of the victims, a student, was seriously injured, while the other victim suffered less serious injuries.

The Sankei newspaper reported that the suspect told police: "I started to feel like killing a woman who looked happy about six years ago. Anyone is fine, I just want to kill a lot of people."

Other media, including NHK, reported similar quotes from the suspect.

A police spokesman said they could not provide further information when asked about media reports on Saturday.

Violence is rare in Japan, but there have been cases of knife attacks by unknown perpetrators.

In June 2008, a man in a light truck rammed into a crowd of people in the popular district of Akihabara. He then jumped out and started stabbing the passersby. Seven people died in the incident.
