JAKARTA - One passenger on an Indian Air plane that crashed moments after takeoff was reported to be safe. Passenger named Ramesh Viswashkumar is now undergoing treatment at the hospital.
"About 294 people died. This included several students when the plane crashed in the building where they were staying," state police chief Vidhichaudhary told Reuters on Thursday, June 12.
He made sure the police found one survivor who was in seat 11A, beside the emergency door.
"Thirty seconds after taking off, there was a loud sound and then the plane crashed," 40-year-old Ramesh Viswashkumar told the Hindustan Times.
During the interview, he showed a boarding pass for seat 11A with the same name.
"Everything happened so fast," he said, lying in hospital bed.
"When I woke up, there were bodies around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of plane debris around me," he said.
"Someone grabbed me and put me in an ambulance and took me to the hospital," said Ramesh Viswashkumar.
He said his brother, Ajay, was sitting in different rows on the plane.
"He traveled with me and I couldn't find him anymore. Please help me find him," he said.
Police chief Ahmedabad GS Malik said the bodies found could include passengers and people who died on the ground.
The death toll includes Vijay Rupani, former chief minister of the state of Gujarat, where Ahmedabad is the main city.
Families have been asked to provide DNA samples to identify dead victims.
