JAKARTA - A joint team has arrested a fugitive in the case of beating a Cilandak police officer when dispersing a crowd and racing illegally on Jalan TB Simatupang, South Jakarta.

"He fled from Depok to Sunter, North Jakarta," said the Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the South Jakarta Police Commissioner Achmad Akbar in Jakarta, as reported by Antara, Friday, 16.

After being on the run for eight days, a joint team from the Depok Police, South Jakarta Police and the General Crime Investigation Directorate of the Metro Jaya Police arrested the perpetrator with the initials MAR at a house in Sunter, North Jakarta, Thursday, July 15 evening.

Achmad said that 18-year-old MAR was one of the main perpetrators of beatings and organizing illegal racing.

The police said that the suspect, known as Dent, had previously languished in prison or was a recidivist in the same case, namely the beating that resulted in the victim's death in 2019.

MAR is known to have dropped out of school because he was involved in criminal activities. The police also questioned the owner of the house that temporarily housed the suspect MAR during his escape.

"Last night the owner of the house where he (MAR) was hiding was under investigation but whether he was actively involved in the escape or not, is still under investigation," said Achmad.

With the arrest of MAR, the total number of suspects for beating a police officer has reached four.

Previously, the police named three suspects, namely M (26), G (24) and A (21). Meanwhile, five other people became suspects who were charged with violating health protocols.

The police charged the suspect with multiple layers of articles, namely Article 170 of the Criminal Code, namely beatings and Article 212 of the Criminal Code against officers who were on duty with a sentence of eight years.

On Thursday, July 8, Cilandak Police personnel, Aiptu Suwardi, were attacked by a number of young people while on duty to disperse illegal racing on Jalan TB Simatupang.

The police officer, who is about to retire, suffered a number of bruises on his body after receiving repeated attacks from the motorcycle gang.
