YOGYAKARTA - The Yogyakarta City Trade Office temporarily closed five traditional markets, which did not sell basic necessities, during the implementation of the emergency community activity restrictions (PPKM).

"The closure will be carried out starting Thursday (8/7/2021)," said Head of the Yogyakarta City Trade Office Yunianto Dwi Sutono as quoted by Antara, Wednesday, July 7.

According to him, the decision to temporarily close the traditional market was made after observing developments and conditions in the field. It is hoped that the implementation of emergency PPKM to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 can provide more optimal results.

The traditional markets temporarily closed are the Beringharjo Barat Market and Beringharjo Business Center which sell fashion and souvenirs, the Klithikan Market which sells used goods, the Yogyakarta Animal and Ornamental Plants Market, and the Tunjung Sari Bicycle Market.

Beringharjo Barat Market and Beringharjo Business Center have been temporarily closed since the emergency PPKM was officially enforced on July 3.

In addition to closing markets that do not sell basic necessities, strict action has also been taken by the Yogyakarta City Trade Office in coordination with the sub-districts and the Yogyakarta City Satpol PP to stop the overflowing activities of traders outside the market during Emergency PPKM.

"The flood of market traders who usually sell on the sidewalk or roadside will be closed. It is absolutely not allowed to sell. It has started from the Kranggan Market, namely the overflow of traders on Jalan Poncowinatan," he said.

Overwhelming of traders in other markets such as Sentul, Demangan, Kotagede, and Patangpuluhan markets will also be temporarily closed.

"We will act decisively. If there are traders who violate the rules, they will be disciplined," he said.

In addition to preventing crowds from forming, the closure of the overflowing activities of traders outside the market is carried out because all basic necessities sold by traders outside the market can also be obtained from traders inside the market.

"In the market, we also apply the emergency PPKM regulation, which is a maximum capacity of 50 percent for traders and visitors," he said.

Traders have been asked to consult through each community to arrange the selling schedule of each trader.
