JAKARTA - Spokesperson for the COVID-19 Task Force, Wiku Adisasmito, rebuked the five provinces with the highest increase in the number of COVID-19 deaths. The five provinces are located on the island of Java.

This week, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 was in West Java, which rose 463 percent from last week, followed by DKI Jakarta, which rose 236 percent, the Special Region of Yogyakarta rose by 148 percent, East Java rose by 145% and Central Java rose 75 percent.

"This ever-increasing death rate certainly cannot be tolerated, because even 1 death is considered a life," said Wiku in a written statement, Friday, July 2.

Wiku said that this high increase in mortality should be corrected immediately by avoiding the potential for death in COVID-19 patients.

"One thing that can be done is to rely on the current active case so that it can save as many lives as possible from the current active case," said Wiku.

Currently, the province that contributes the highest active cases is DKI Jakarta, with 57,295 cases, followed by West Java with 43,436 cases, Central Java with 33,805 cases, DIY with 8,917 cases and East Java with 7,488 cases.

Unfortunately, these five provinces have very high isolation beds or bed occupancy ratios (BOR) and COVID-19 special ICUs this week.

In DKI Jakarta, the isolation BOR is filled with 91.14 percent and the ICU BOR is filled 91.88 percent. In West Java, the isolation BOR is filled with 90.5 percent and the ICU BOR is filled 88.6 percent.

In Central Java, the isolation BOR was filled 89 percent and the ICU BOR was filled 82.87 percent. In East Java, the isolation BOR was filled 79.69 percent and the ICU BOR was filled 73.91 percent. In DI Yogyakarta, the isolation BOR was filled 88.76 percent and the ICU BOR was filled 87.5 percent.

"For this reason, all provincial governments are requested to take a deeper look at deaths from COVID-19, by ensuring that death data is one that must be monitored regularly," explained Wiku.

"Especially in these 5 provinces, this high increase in death must be immediately mitigated with concrete actions," he added.
