MATARAM - The Central Lombok Police, West Nusa Tenggara, have increased their handling of the case of the alleged burning of three students at a pesantren in Batukliang District to the investigation stage.

"Yes, it's true. It has been raised for investigation according to the results of the title of the case," said Head of Public Relations Section of the Central Lombok Police, Iptu Brata Kusnadi, as reported by ANTARA, Monday, July 6.

Brata said investigators had not named a suspect because they still needed to strengthen the evidence to uncover the case.

According to him, the investigation leads to the alleged crime of severe persecution which resulted in one of the victims dying.

The alleged criminal act is charged with Article 76C in conjunction with Article 80 paragraphs (2) and (3) of Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Amendments to Law Number 23 of 2002 concerning Child Protection and/or Article 466 paragraph (2) and (3) of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code.

During the investigation phase, investigators have examined dozens of witnesses, ranging from the reporter who is the parent of one of the victims, the victims, the administrators of the boarding school, the Ministry of Religion, to asking for expert information.

"The last time I heard the expert opinion from Unram, that's all," said Brata.

Handling the case is under the Women and Children Protection Unit (PPA) of the Central Lombok Police Criminal Investigation Unit.

The investigation was carried out to investigate alleged criminal acts and the possibility of negligence from the pesantren who caused three students to be victims of arson.

The incident occurred in November 2025 and again became a public concern after a video showing the victims undergoing treatment for burns circulated widely on social media in May 2026.

The case also received attention from the Mataram City Child Protection Agency (LPA). The Chairman of the Mataram City LPA, Joko Jumadi, said that the three victims were still students in the first grade of the tsanawiyah madrasah at the time of the incident.

According to the results of the LPA investigation, the three victims were allegedly doused with fuel before being burned by other students. As a result of the incident, two victims suffered serious burns, while one victim died.

"There are three victims. Two were burned and one died," said Joko.
