Yogyakarta Residents Panic Scattered Due To 5.3 Magnitude Earthquake

JAKARTA - Residents of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) who were still at home on Monday, at around 05.15 western Indonesia time were shocked by an earthquake measuring 5.3 magnitude which made them panic and immediately rushed out of the house.

Among them, such as at the shelter at the Indonesian Islamic University (UII) Kaliurang street, Sleman Regency, when an earthquake occurred, dozens of COVID-19 patients panicked and scattered to the terraces of their rooms, some wore masks and others did not have time to wear them.

However, as soon as the earthquake shock ended, they immediately returned to their respective rooms in the four-story building.

"It's scary. But you can't go down," said Ayu, one of the residents of the shelter on the fourth floor when contacted via Whatsapp.

The earthquake also made residents of Sidoagung, Godean, Sleman panic so they ran out of their homes.

One of the residents of Sidoagung, Purnomo Edi, said that the earthquake that was felt was very strong. While still resting, his bed was rocking, forcing him to get up immediately.

"So I left the house, the residents also left the house," said Purnomo Edi.

Meanwhile, Tria, a resident of Margoluwih, Godean, Sleman also said the same thing. According to him, the earthquake shaking was similar to the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake, although it had a fairly short duration.

"It's like the 2006 earthquake in my opinion, but Alhamdulillah it's only for a moment," said Tria.

Based on a report from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, on June 28, 2021, at 05:15:29 western Indonesia time, an earthquake measuring 5.3 magnitude occurred at a location of 8.56 south latitude - 110.58 east longitude but did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

The earthquake occurred in the sea at a distance of 66 km south of Wonosari City, Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region at a depth of 61 km.

According to the BMKG, the earthquake shocks were felt in Bantul, Gunungkidul, Purworejo, Trenggalek, Tulungagung, Blitar, Nganjuk, Sleman, Yogyakarta, Klaten, Cilacap, Kebumen, Banjarnegara, Malang and Solo areas.
