JAKARTA - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, asked the government to postpone the implementation of face-to-face learning (PTM) in line with the recent surge in COVID-19 cases. Moreover, new variants were found in several areas ahead of the opening of PTM in schools in July.

"There may be a number of things that the government needs to evaluate on plans. Among other things, the issue of attendance at school may be postponed a bit", Dasco told reporters, Tuesday, June 15.

According to him, the policy for opening face-to-face schools was determined before there was a high spike in COVID-19 in several areas. So, he said, it was natural that the face-to-face school plan would be reconsidered.

"Perhaps this has been delayed by two months, three months of implementation while waiting for the COVID-19 situation, which hopefully the spike can be overcome", said the daily chairman of the Gerindra Party Central Executive Board (DPP).

Previously, the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, reminded the government that face-to-face learning in July should be carried out carefully.

The government and related parties, according to her, are important to fulfill a number of requirements, before starting face-to-face learning in schools.

"The plan to restart face-to-face learning in schools must of course be supported, but we must be careful and fulfill all the conditions for preventing the transmission of COVID-19", said Puan Maharani in a statement in Jakarta, Monday, June 14.

The chairman of the PDIP Party DPP said that face-to-face learning in schools during the pandemic can only be done after the positive ratio of COVID-19 is below five percent and the death rate decreases.
