JAKARTA - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday expressed concern and criticized the mutual attacks between the United States and Iran, with President Donald Trump later declaring the Tehran-Washington ceasefire to be over.
"The Secretary-General is concerned about the return of military confrontation in the Gulf. The incidents we have witnessed over the past 24 hours risk thwarting the diplomatic progress that has been achieved between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States," UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said at a press conference, launching Anadolu (9/7).
He warned, "a return to full-scale hostilities would have catastrophic consequences for the people of the region and for international peace and security and for the global community, the global economy as a whole."
"The Secretary-General calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid further escalation, and immediately take steps to de-escalate," Dujarric said, noting that the UN Secretary-General "recalls the obligation of all parties to fully comply with international law, including the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, as well as respect for the rights and freedoms of navigation."
Saying the UN Secretary-General then urged "Iran and the United States to immediately resume negotiations and resolve outstanding issues through diplomacy," Dujarric said: "Of course, we remain committed to supporting all efforts to prevent the return of conflict, restore stability, and advance a comprehensive and sustainable solution to this conflict," he explained.
The statement was made after the US and Iran launched attacks on Wednesday, in a new escalation following Iran's attack on three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strait is one of the world's most important energy trade routes, carrying most of the global exports of oil and liquefied natural gas from Gulf producers.
