AHY Talks about the Democratic Anniversary Agenda: Economic Growth Must Be Accompanied by New Jobs

JAKARTA - The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), said his party carried out three main agendas on the 25th Anniversary (HUT), namely advancing the economy, upholding justice, and maintaining democracy as the direction of political struggle.

"There are three main elements that will be the 25-year line of the Democratic Party. The first is to advance the economy. The second is to uphold justice. The third is to maintain democracy," said AHY in the kick-off activity of the 25th Anniversary of the Democratic Party, reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, July 8.

AHY explained that the agenda to advance the economy came from the Democratic Party's experience when leading a government that prioritizes high economic growth, justice, and sustainability.

He said the strategy was realized through four pillars, namely encouraging economic growth (pro-growth), opening up employment (pro-jobs), siding with the poor (pro-poor) and maintaining environmental sustainability (pro-environment).

"High growth, but it must be accompanied by opening up employment, job creation, not many people are laid off, not many people lose their jobs," he said.

He emphasized that development policies must also remain in favor of the poor so that Indonesia can move out of the middle-income country group to a high-income country.

Apart from the economy, AHY emphasized that the enforcement of justice is an important agenda that the Democratic Party continues to fight for. He assessed that the public must want a just law as well as equal opportunities in the economic, social, and political fields.

"Justice must be upheld. The law must be upheld. It must not be sharp down, blunt up," he said.

AHY then discussed the third agenda, namely maintaining democracy. He revealed that this is the identity of the Democratic Party since its establishment. Furthermore, AHY also likened democracy to oxygen in daily life.

"When there is a disturbance in democratic life, we feel like we are losing oxygen, gasping for breath," he said.

Therefore, said AHY, the Democratic Party considers democracy to be something that must be fought for and his party will always stand at the forefront to escort the course of democracy in the country.

On that occasion, AHY also launched a series of activities to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Democratic Party which includes social, environmental, youth, sports activities, as well as organizational consolidation as part of efforts to strengthen the role of the party in responding to public aspirations.
