JAKARTA - The South Korean military's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) on Wednesday announced the detention of a North Korean soldier who crossed the border between the two countries believed to be a defector.
"The military secured a North Korean soldier on the central front line on Tuesday night and the relevant authorities are currently investigating the details," the JCS said in a message to the media, without providing further details, reported The Korea Times (25/6).
The soldier reportedly expressed his intention to defect by crossing the Military Demarcation Line.
The Military Demarcation Line runs along the Demilitarised Zone, about 50 kilometers from Seoul and about 150 kilometers from Pyongyang, The Korea Herald reported.
The latest case marks the fourth border crossing by North Koreans since President Lee Jae Myung's administration began in June last year.
In October, a North Korean staff sergeant who wanted to defect crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) that separates the two Koreas by walking south along a footpath along the east coast.
Two previous cases in July involved civilians. One of them crossed the central front line into South Korea, while the other was rescued on the south side of the mouth of the Han River west of the inter-Korean border.
