JAKARTA - A sand miner named Veri Irawan (33), a resident of Sumberwuluh Village, Lumajang Regency, East Java, who was buried by the remnants of the Mount Semeru hot cloud material (APG) suffered serious burns undergoing intensive treatment at the Haryoto Lumajang Hospital.
"The incident occurred when the victim and a number of his colleagues were manually mining sand in the lava flow area of Mount Semeru on Friday (June 19) evening," said the Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Lumajang Regency, Isnugroho in Lumajang, Saturday, quoted by Antara.
He said the victim left for work with about 16 other miners at night.
While at the mining location under the Perak Gladak Bridge, a pile of sand material that still retains a high temperature suddenly collapsed and covered the victim's body on Saturday, June 20, early morning.
"The victim along with about 16 colleagues carried out manual sand mining activities. While the activity was taking place, the sand cliff near the victim's work site suddenly collapsed and fell on his body," he said.
The victim's colleagues who were at the location immediately provided assistance and evacuated Veri to the hospital for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of the RSUD Dr. Haryoto Lumajang Wawan Arwijanto said the victim had received intensive medical treatment since arriving at the hospital because the burns he suffered reached 80 percent.
"The medical team has performed surgery to clean the burns, installed fluid access to maintain the patient's body condition, and provided respiratory assistance, because it is feared that there are injuries due to exposure to hot air," he said.
He explained that the initial treatment of the victim had been carried out, then an operation to clean all his burns, installing fluid channels, and respiratory assistance.
"The burns suffered by more than 80 percent. The condition is very dangerous, because generally burns above 40 percent are already considered severe," he said.
He explained that the victim was still in critical condition and needed intensive care, because in addition to skin damage, the medical team was also aware of the possibility of respiratory tract disorders due to inhaling hot air and kidney function disorders due to the loss of large amounts of fluid.
"We will do our best to provide medical treatment and currently the patient is still in critical condition and needs close supervision. Please pray for the community so that his condition can improve," he said.
His condition was reported to be critical due to the extent of the burns he suffered and the risk of disruption to vital organs.
Based on PVMBG data, Mount Semeru erupted accompanied by hot cloud discharge on Friday (19 June) at 07.21 WIB with a glide distance of 4.5 km towards Besuk Kobokan.
