The Minister of Law Explains the Reason for the Revision of the Police Law due to the Increasingly Complex Security Challenges

JAKARTA - The Minister of Law (Menkum) Supratman Andi Agtas emphasized that the update of the regulations of the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia (Polri) is very necessary. This step is taken so that the police institution is able to adapt to technological developments and face increasingly complex security challenges.

According to Supratman, the dynamics of the strategic environment, the rapid advancement of information technology, and changes in security patterns in society require the National Police to continue to improve institutional capacity and the professionalism of human resources (HR).

"The National Police as a state instrument plays a role in maintaining public security and order, enforcing the law, and providing protection, care, and services to the public," said Supratman in Jakarta, Thursday (11/6/2026).

The Urgency of Strengthening the Legal Basis of the National Police

Furthermore, Supratman explained that the complexity of current security challenges encourages the government to strengthen the legal basis of the bhayangkara corps. One of them is realized through the revision of the Police Law.

This regulatory change has been officially approved in the Plenary Meeting of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) which passed the Draft Law (RUU) Polri into law on Tuesday (9/6).

He added that domestic security stability is the main key to realizing a just, prosperous, and civilized society based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution. Therefore, improving the performance of the National Police in carrying out its functions and authorities is a requirement that cannot be negotiated.

"The existence of a more responsive and adaptive legal basis is an urgent need to ensure that the National Police can carry out its functions and authorities optimally in accordance with the demands of the times," said the Minister of Law and Human Rights.

Important Points in the Police Bill

In the previous working meeting to discuss the Polri bill, the government proposed a number of strategic strengthening points. Some important points that are included in the discussion include:

The duties of the National Police Chief: Confirmation of the duties and responsibilities of the Head of the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia. Main tasks: Adjusting the needs of the main tasks of the police with the digital era. Strengthening Kompolnas: Optimizing the duties and functions of the National Police Commission. Members' Rights & Positions: Fulfillment of the rights of members of the National Police as well as regulations on filling positions outside the National Police organization. Work & Education: Adjustment of the retirement age limit as well as the organization and training of police profession education.

With the enactment of this new regulation, the government hopes that the National Police can move more agile, modern, and professional in serving the community in the midst of the digital era.
