JAKARTA - The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy forced a US tanker to turn around near the Strait of Hormuz after the ship tried to pass with its radar system turned off on Thursday morning.

Citing a military source familiar with the information, Tasnim said IRGC naval forces responded quickly to the ship and fired warning shots in its direction, forcing the ship to retreat.

Tasnim attributed the incident to a previous explosion near the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, where Iranian media reported that air defenses had been activated.

The news agency said the incident did not cause any casualties or material damage.

The report comes as a US official confirmed to Anadolu that the US carried out another round of airstrikes in southern Iran, shooting down four Iranian one-way attack drones that posed a threat near the Strait of Hormuz.

"US forces also attacked an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was about to launch a fifth drone," the official said, on condition of anonymity, Wednesday (27/5).

"These actions are measured, purely defensive, and intended to maintain the ceasefire," the official added.

Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran in February. Tehran retaliated with attacks targeting Israel as well as US allies in the Gulf, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The ceasefire came into effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation and was later extended by US President Donald Trump indefinitely.
