JAKARTA - The police have secured nine people related to a house fire in Batang Duku Village, Bengkalis Regency, Riau, which killed an elderly resident and caused one victim to be seriously injured.
The head of the Bukit Batu Sector Police, Kompol Al Imran, in Pekanbaru, Wednesday, said the nine people who were arrested are currently undergoing an examination at the Bukit Batu Police.
"We have secured nine people and are currently still developing further. Those who were secured are still under age," said Al Imran.
He explained that the fire occurred on Wednesday morning at around 00.28 WIB at Abdullah's house in Batang Duku Village, Bukit Batu District.
In the incident, Abdullah's wife, Sakinah (74), died from burns. The victim was evacuated by residents and taken to the Sungai Pakning Health Center, but was not helped.
Meanwhile, Abdullah (84) suffered serious injuries and until now is still undergoing intensive treatment at the Siak Hospital. His condition is reported to be still critical.
The police chief appealed to parents to increase supervision of children, especially in socializing and activities outside the home, to prevent actions that endanger the community.
The fire also caused the victim's house and belongings to be unable to be saved due to the rapid spread of the fire.
One of the residents, Jamal, said the fire was the fifth incident in Batang Duku Village in the last two months.
"In the last two months, five houses have burned down. It is suspected that the houses were deliberately burned," he said.
According to him, residents began to worry about leaving their houses empty because the perpetrator was suspected of targeting houses that had little supervision.
Jamal hopes that the police will immediately reveal the perpetrators behind the series of fires so that they will not cause more casualties and losses to the community.
