JAKARTA - The North Korean government has tested the latest cruise and ballistic missile systems as well as a number of artillery rockets.

The test, which was witnessed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, is said to be Pyongyang's attempt to modernize its weapons and achieve its five-year defense development goals.

Tuesday's test, which included testing of a "tactical cruise missile weapon system" and a "light multi-purpose missile launch system", was announced a day after the South Korean military said North Korea had launched a number of projectiles, including short-range ballistic missiles, from its west coast.

According to the South Korean military, the projectile was launched at around 13:00 local time and flew as far as 80 kilometers. This test marks the first time North Korea has launched a ballistic missile since April 19.

The North Korean central news agency KCNA said the test included analysis and calculation of the power of the "special mission warhead on a tactical ballistic missile" as well as the accuracy of the "tactical cruise missile" attack equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) based guidance technology.

KCNA claimed that the tactical cruise missile equipped with a high-precision autonomous navigation system can hit targets up to 100 km.

It is reported that the missile will be deployed for long-range artillery brigades along the southern border with South Korea.

Kim Jong Un is said to have expressed satisfaction with the results of the test, which is considered to show "a clear sign of the increasing strength of our armed forces".

He also said the fire control system and the automatic system of all launcher vehicles had been updated to "adapt to modern warfare conditions in order to improve the ability in war".
