JAKARTA - The Ministry of Culture encourages art learning in schools not to stop at techniques and skills. Art education is considered to need to provide more space for students' appreciation, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.

This was discussed by Minister of Culture Fadli Zon when he received the artist and musician Embie C. Noer at the Ministry of Culture Office, Jakarta, Tuesday, May 26.

During the meeting, Embie delivered a review of the art textbooks for junior high and high school. According to Embie, the art curriculum is still too heavy on technical and vocational aspects.

"Art lessons should be a space to build students' critical thinking, empathy, and courage through aesthetic experiences," said Embie.

He assessed that students first need to understand and appreciate art before entering into technical matters. Appreciation is not only for music, but also literature, dance, fine art, and film.

Embie also proposed the compilation of an introductory book on art education based on culture. The book is expected to be a supporting reference for art teachers throughout Indonesia.

Fadli Zon menyambut masukan tersebut. Menurutnya, kemampuan mengapresiasi seni penting untuk membentuk karakter generasi muda.

"Young generations need to be taught to appreciate art, whether it's literature, painting, film, or other forms of art," said Fadli.

He said understanding the value of aesthetics can strengthen students' sensitivity to art and culture.

Director General of Development, Utilization, and Training of Culture Ahmad Mahendra said teachers needed to be encouraged to build student appreciation before teaching technical aspects.

"The younger generation needs to have a high sense of appreciation for art and culture," said Mahendra.

According to Mahendra, strengthening the perspective of teachers is an important part of building art education that is oriented towards values and cultural sensitivity.

The Ministry of Culture stated that strengthening art education needs to be carried out through collaboration with artists, educators, and stakeholders. The goal is that art lessons are not only to produce students who can perform, but also be able to understand, appreciate, and read the cultural values behind the artwork.
