JAKARTA - The colossal film "Dayak" is being prepared to bring Dayak culture to the big screen. This project is not only pursuing big viewing, but also wants to correct the old stigma about the Dayak community, which is often considered backward and closed.
The film production plan was discussed in an audience of the "Dayak" Film Production Team with the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Fadli Zon at the Ministry of Culture's office, Jakarta, Monday, May 25.
The Chairman of the "Dayak" Film Production Team, Thoeseng T.T. Asang, said that this film is an effort to introduce the history, diversity, and peace values of the Dayak community to the public.
According to Thoeseng, the Dayak people have hundreds of sub-tribes and hundreds of languages. This wealth is an important part of the Indonesian cultural mosaic.
This film will also raise the Tumbang Anoi Treaty of 1894, one of the important milestones in the history of peace for the Dayak community.
"Through this film, we want to preserve, preserve, and introduce Dayak culture with the spirit of 'Work for the Country, Dayak for Indonesia'," said Thoeseng.
The executive producer of the film "Dayak", Abriantinus, said the production team had been conducting research since 2021. The research involved indigenous figures and Dayak people in Kalimantan.
He said the film would combine elements of history and fiction. The goal is to present the Dayak story in the format of a feature film that is still interesting for a wide audience.
"This Dayak film is expected to correct the negative stigma against the Dayak community, which has been considered backward and closed," said Abriantinus.
He emphasized that the Dayak community upholds peace and is able to coexist with the wider community. This film will also introduce the Dayak customary law which emphasizes a humanistic and family approach.
The director of the film "Dayak", Ivan Baghito, said that the appointment of Dayak culture to the big screen is important as a cultural archive. He assessed that public interest in culture-based films continues to grow.
"This film is expected not only to be entertainment, but also to strengthen people's knowledge about Dayak culture comprehensively," said Ivan.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon appreciates the film production plan. He said that Dayak culture is an important part of national cultural wealth that has a strong local history and wisdom.
"We support various efforts that can advance national culture, including the Dayak culture which is very rich and interesting to be raised through films," said Fadli.
However, Fadli reminded that cultural films still need a strong scenario. Without a biting story, the big message can be lost by a flat packaging.
"Commercial films require a strong and interesting scenario to be able to reach a wide audience," he said.
Fadli hopes that the film "Dayak" can be a means of cultural education, introduction of history, and promotion of Indonesian values of peace and diversity.
