JAKARTA - The rampant acts of robbery and street crime in West Jakarta have triggered residents' unrest until the area is nicknamed "Gotham City" on social media. The nickname refers to the fictional city in the Batman story which is identical to the high crime rate.

This condition was also highlighted by a member of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, the PDIP Faction, Hardiyanto Kenneth. Kenneth even said he was ready to be "Batman" to oversee security in West Jakarta.

The phenomenon of increasing street crime was discussed in the Ngobrol Bareng Forkopimko (NGOPI) activity held at the West Jakarta City Hall. The meeting brought together elements of the West Jakarta City Government, the police, the TNI, to the DKI Jakarta DPRD to discuss steps to mitigate street crime.

Kent appreciated the quick response of the West Jakarta City Government together with the elements of the City Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimko) in finding solutions to the rampant criminal acts that disturb the community.

"Today I appreciate the quick response of the West Jakarta Mayor Ibu Iin Mutmainnah, the Police Chief, Dandim, and the Muspiko ranks by making this NGOPI event. The goal is good, to find a way out together so that the phenomenon of begal in West Jakarta can be mitigated well and the community feels safe again when they are active," Kenneth told reporters, Friday, May 22.

According to Kenneth, security in the region cannot be solely borne by the police. He assessed that handling crime requires cross-sectoral collaboration, ranging from local governments, security forces, to the community.

Kenneth assessed that the large number of "Gotham City" designations was a serious alarm about the condition of residents who were beginning to lose their sense of security when they were in public spaces, especially at night.

"If the public calls West Jakarta as 'Gotham City', this is certainly an alarm for all of us. This means that there is a sense of fear and unrest that the residents really feel. Don't let the public lose their sense of security when they go out, work, or come home at night," he said.

Kent then joked by comparing himself to "Batman". However, he said that this was a form of seriousness in carrying out the function of supervision as a member of the DKI Jakarta DPRD.

"As a legislator in Kebon Sirih, I try to position myself as a 'Batman' who will always oversee what happens in West Jakarta for the convenience, security, and welfare of the West Jakarta Community in accordance with the oversight function that I have in the DKI Jakarta DPRD," he explained.

He asked the police to map out the details of crime-prone points, especially on roads with minimal lighting and surveillance. According to him, most of the acts of robbery and fighting occur on public roads that do not have adequate security systems.

"Therefore, I ask for a detailed mapping of crime-prone points. With this mapping, the police can carry out routine patrols and extra guards at vulnerable hours. The presence of the police on the ground is very important to provide a preventive effect," said the Chairman of IKAL PPRA Angkatan LXII Lemhannas RI.

In addition to patrols, Kent also encourages the optimization of supervision through the installation of CCTV at a number of crime-prone points. He said that the procurement of surveillance cameras could be carried out through a cooperation scheme with private companies and BUMD through corporate social responsibility or CSR funds.

"The procurement of CCTV if you want it to be cheaper and more efficient can be through a rental scheme, the route can go through CSR from parties who really want to help the security of the environment or can also involve BUMD (Regional Owned Enterprises). So we put it in important points that have often been the scene of criminal acts of robbery and fights," he said.

Kent hopes that the mitigation steps discussed with Forkopimko do not stop at the discussion forum. He asked for regular evaluations to increase patrols and street lighting to reduce the crime rate in West Jakarta.

"The most important thing is the follow-up. We want there to be regular evaluations, more massive patrols, improved street lighting, and a surveillance system that really works. I want West Jakarta to be known again as a safe and comfortable area for the community," added Kenneth.
