Israel is systematically targeting the Palestinian education sector through destructive policies aimed at depriving students of their right to education, Palestinian Minister of Education and Higher Education Amjad Barham said on Thursday.
He conveyed this at the 12th annual international scientific conference organized by the Jordanian Association for Educational Sciences in cooperation with the University of Jordan with the theme "Vision and Ideas for Critical Issues in Arab Education: Towards Competitive Arab Education".
Bahram said that most of the educational institutions in Gaza have been destroyed, while violations against the education sector continue in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as reported by Anadolu from WAFA (8/5).
Furthermore, Barham explained, around 85 percent of university buildings in Gaza have been destroyed by Israel, along with 293 of 307 schools, while attacks on educational institutions in the occupied West Bank continue.
He described the damage as part of a "systematic destructive policy" aimed at dismantling the education process and denying students access to education.
Barham said the ministry continues to strive to maintain educational services despite facing increasing challenges.
He outlined several development initiatives led by the ministry, including the Education for Development plan, which focuses on expanding open learning, strengthening vocational and technical education, reforming the upper secondary school system, and supporting applied scientific research.
Barham also said the ministry is working to modernize the academic programs and school curricula to keep up with technological developments and artificial intelligence while improving the training of academic staff.
"The challenge is very big, but the determination to develop is also very big," said Barham.
"We will continue our path of development that contributes to the development of the Palestinian state and its institutions despite the challenges posed by the occupation (Israel)," he said.
Israel launched a genocide in Gaza on October 8, 2023, in response to a Hamas-led militant group's attack on the country's southern region the day before.
Health authorities on Thursday revealed that the number of deaths due to Israeli aggression in Gaza since October 2023 has reached 72,628, while around 172,520 others were injured.
