JAKARTA - Lebanese President Joseph Aoun paid tribute to the journalists who were killed as a result of Israel's attack on his country.

This tribute is in commemoration of Lebanon's annual Heroes Day, especially journalists who are "intentionally targeted" for reporting the truth on the ground.

"The media martyrs refused anything, other than conveying the reality on the ground, paying with their lives for the holy message," Aoun said in a statement on X, quoted by Al Jazeera, Wednesday, May 6.

"Their blood is proof that the voice of Lebanon cannot be defeated," he said.

President Aoun's tribute follows the killing of Al Akhbar journalist Amal Khalil on April 22 in an Israeli air strike targeted in southern Lebanon.

Khalil's colleagues had previously revealed that the victim had received threats related to his reporting in southern Lebanon from a phone call from someone claiming to be an Israeli security officer days before his murder.

The evidence led Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to call the attack a "planned war crime" carried out by Israel.

According to the Lebanese Press Syndicate, as many as 27 journalists or media workers have been killed in Israeli attacks since March 2, 2026.

International observers described the death as part of a systematic campaign of targeted attacks aimed at imposing a news blackout.
