JAKARTA - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on Sunday that his country would retaliate for Ukraine's deadly attack on an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea.
This comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv had carried out a long-range attack in the Caspian Sea on ships carrying military cargo involving Iran, underlining the growing international dimension of Russia's war in Ukraine.
"Zelensky has attacked an Iranian merchant ship, killing a sailor," Foreign Minister Araghchi wrote on X, describing it as "a flagrant violation of the UN Charter carried out at the behest of Israel to drag Europe into its war," as reported by Al Arabiya from AFP (27/7).
He added that during talks with Kaja Kallas of the European Union and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, he "explained that what the stowaways in Kyiv did CANNOT BE LEFT UNANSWERED."
Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry said the attack caused the ship to "explode, killing one sailor and injuring several others."
Tehran "has never interfered in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine," the ministry said in a statement.
Earlier, President Zelensky on Saturday said on social media that the armed forces had achieved "very strong results with long-range strikes on the Caspian Sea - including ships used in the delivery of military cargo involving Iran, as well as a warship."
The Ukrainian intelligence service, for their part, reported on Telegram that the drone attack was carried out against "an internationally sanctioned cargo ship used to transport military cargo between Iran and Russia."
According to Iranian state television, the Foreign Ministry summoned Ukrainian businesspeople in Tehran on Saturday to protest these "hostile and criminal actions".
