JAKARTA - Culture Minister Fadli Zon visited the Pudong Art Museum (MAP) in Shanghai, Saturday, April 25. This visit was used to see how modern museums manage large exhibitions, attract the public, and build cooperation with world art institutions.

At MAP, Fadli reviewed two exhibitions, namely Picasso Through the Eyes of Paul Smith and The Wonder of Patterns: Masterpieces from India, Iran and the Ottoman World.

According to Fadli, museums today are not enough to just be a place to store works. Museums must be able to bring stories to life, open cultural dialogues, and make the public feel close to art.

"Museums can become a space for cross-cultural, cross-time, and cross-disciplinary dialogue, which brings together fine art, design, history, cultural heritage, and public experiences creatively," Fadli said in a written statement received by VOI in Jakarta, Sunday, April 26.

He assessed that MAP provides an important overview for the management of modern museums. The museum builds a global network through joint exhibitions and cooperation with major world institutions, including the Louvre and the Musée Picasso.

"MAP provides an important example of how museums can strengthen global networks through joint exhibitions and cooperation with partner museums around the world," said Fadli.

MAP opened in 2021 in the Lujiazui area, Shanghai. This museum is known as one of the modern art museums that actively presents international exhibitions and collaborates with a number of leading art institutions in the world.

Fadli said the Ministry of Culture wants to strengthen the Indonesian art ecosystem. The focus includes curatorial quality, inter-museum cooperation, collection exchange, residency programs, talent development, and expanding public access.

For Indonesia, the lesson from the visit to MAP is important so that museums do not only live when there are big events. Museums need to have a strong program, a wide network, and a way of telling stories that makes art easier for the public to understand.
