The Period of the Party Chairman's Term of Office is Questioned, PDIP: KPK Does Not Need to Interfere in Internal Party Affairs

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) Perjuangan has criticized the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) study regarding the proposal to limit the maximum two-term term of the general chairman of political parties.

PDIP spokesperson, Mohamad Guntur Romli, assessed that the KPK had stepped outside its main duties and functions by entering the internal realm of political parties.

"The KPK should focus on taking action and preventing corruption related to state administrators and state financial losses," said Guntur, in his statement quoted by X @GunRomli, Friday, April 24.

He also assessed that the study has the potential to be in conflict with the principles of the constitution. According to him, political parties are legal entities that have internal autonomy as voluntary organizations.

Guntur emphasized that the proposal could violate the principles of freedom of association and assembly as stipulated in Article 28E paragraph (3) of the 1945 Constitution as well as Law Number 2 of 2011 concerning Amendments to Law Number 2 of 2008 concerning Political Parties (UU Parpol).

In addition, he reminded that the discourse on limiting the term of office of the party's general chairman is also at risk of being politicized and abused. "Interventions on the duration of party leadership are very prone to being used as a political tool," he said.

According to Guntur, if the study is applied as a policy, it is not impossible to use it to weaken or overthrow political opponents.

Regarding this, PDIP asked the KPK to remain in its corridor as a law enforcement agency, especially in overseeing the flow of funds and preventing the abuse of authority by public officials. "The KPK should focus on monitoring and preventing corruption, not interfering with the sovereignty of political party organizations," he concluded.
